How to choose a mattress for a child: guide YappyKids

How to choose a mattress for a child: guide YappyKids

In short. A newborn needs a hard mattress the size of a cot (120×60 cm), height 9–10 cm, with a removable cover. The best option for several years is a double-sided mattress: the hard side for up to a year and a half, then softer. A child from 3 years to an “adult” bed 160×80 or 90×200 needs a higher, medium-hard mattress, with springs or dense foam. A mattress is a personal thing, we don’t buy used ones.

Parents often choose a cot with their eyes: color, shape, how it will fit into the interior. You can't choose a mattress like that. It is he who holds the child's back for 12–18 hours a day when the spine is just forming. The requirements for a mattress for a baby and for an older child are different, so first choose who you are looking for a mattress for.

Make your choice

Cot mattress 0–3 years

1. Size: according to the bed of the cot

The mattress must fit the size of the sleeping place, , without large gaps between the edge of the mattress and the side. An arm or leg gets caught in the wide gap, and the soft edge of the mattress, bent upward, is dangerous for breathing. The standard newborn cot is 120×60 cm and all YappyKids 120×60 mattresses fit exactly on all of our cots. For the carrycot YappyÉtude there are mattresses 80×60 cm.

2. Firmness: why a newborn needs a firm mattress

Up to one year, the child should sleep on a hard surface. This is not about comfort, but about safety: the face “sinks” into the soft mattress, and it is more difficult for the baby to breathe if he has rolled over on his stomach. Firm support helps the spine, which does not yet have adult curves, form correctly.

Stiffness is provided by coconut fiber or a similar stiffness material - for example, agave sisal in YappyMemory II. After a year and a half, when the child walks confidently, the mattress can be made softer, so the most practical mattresses for a cot are double-sided : a hard side for a baby, latex or foam for an older child. Turn it over and the mattress lasts until the end of the cot.

3. Fillers: what's inside and why

  • Coconut fiber - tough, breathable, natural. Hard side base for newborn. A mattress made entirely of coconut becomes too hard after a year and a half—you need a second, soft side or a layer of foam.
  • Sisal (agave fiber) - a natural alternative to coconut in terms of rigidity and ventilation; in YappyMemory II provides support from birth.
  • Latex - elastic, hypoallergenic, keeps its shape for a long time. Nice "soft" side after a year. In Premium YappyAir, latex with gel and perforation dissipates heat better.
  • Memory foam (memory foam) - follows the shape of the body and relieves pressure from the shoulders and hips. Works when the child grows up; in YappyMemory II it is combined with sisal.
  • Elastic foam - elastic surface. In YappyFlex, the foam block lies under a coconut and cotton layer: firm but comfortable from birth.
  • Linen and cotton are natural layers that wick away moisture and make the surface pleasant.

What to avoid: mattresses with buckwheat husks sewn directly into the cover (do not wash, it rustles), and cheap solid foam rubber (sags quickly).

4. Mattress height

For the cot 120×60, 9–10 cm is optimal. A thicker mattress “eats” the height of the side: when the child gets up, there will be too little left to the edge of the side.

5. Cover and hygiene

The mattress will be wet. Not “if”, but “when”. That's why:

  • Removable cover with zipper, washable at 30–40 °C - all YappyKids mattresses have it.
  • Cover fabric - cotton (YappyFlex, YappyLatex with certificate OEKO-TEX) or knitwear impregnated with aloe vera (YappyMemory II).
  • Waterproof fitted sheet YappyShield over the mattress - a breathable membrane that prevents moisture from reaching the filling. Two pieces per change - and the mattress will live dry for all the years.

8. Questions and answers: 0–3 years

Hard and the size of a cot. For several years, double-sided is more practical: coconut side from birth, latex or foam - after a year. For example, YappyLatex or YappyMemory II 120×60; the most affordable option is YappyFlex.

Not necessarily, but YappyMemory II is suitable from birth: the firm sisal layer provides the necessary support, and the memory foam works as the child grows up.

Hard - coconut or sisal. The child sleeps on it until about a year and a half, then the mattress is turned over.

Yes, if the inner size of the cot is 120×60 cm - this is the European standard. Please measure your cot before ordering.

No, don't worry. For the first weeks and even months, the baby sleeps in one position and cannot turn around on his own, so a small depression under the head is normal. Turn the mattress head-to-foot once a month and it will smooth out.

No, just the cover. The filling is ventilated. To prevent moisture from reaching the filling, use a waterproof fitted sheet YappyShield.

Mattress for bed 3+

1. What changes after three years

The child already weighs 15–25 kg, spins in his sleep, jumps on the bed and will sleep on this mattress for five to seven years. Requirements change:

  • Hardness - medium. The “stone” surface is no longer needed, but the mattress should not sink: the spine is still growing.
  • The height of 10–12 cm is normal. The bed does not have a high side that the mattress could “eat,” and the thickness gives durability.
  • Support and durability. The mattress must hold its shape under an active child for years, so springs and dense foam appear.

2. Size: for which bed

  • 160×80 cm - house beds YappyHytte, YappyLux, floor bed YappyCasa, teenage bed YappyÉtude. The most popular size is from 3 years.
  • 90×200 cm - semi-high YappyGrott, YappySole, YappyHytte 200: “adult” length, enough until adolescence.
  • 140–190×70 cm - sliding YappyGrow: it has its own mattress, which extends along with the bed (230,00 €).

The rule is the same: the mattress is the size of the sleeping place, without large gaps. If the bed has a barrier, make sure it remains at least 16 cm higher than the mattress.

3. Types of mattresses for children's beds

  • Springs mini pocket (YappyMiniPocket) - independent small springs, each in its own pocket, on top HR foam and coconut. The mattress does not “sway” when the child turns around and lasts a long time. Choice for active children.
  • Memory foam + sisal (YappyMemory II) - quiet, gently follows the shape of the body, while the sisal layer prevents it from falling through. For those who like to sleep “cuddled” with a mattress.
  • Coconut + latex (YappyLatex) - elastic and breathable, classic without springs.
  • Coconut + elastic foam (YappyFlex) - medium hardness, good ventilation, affordable price.
  • Biofoam + coconut + flax (YappyBioFoam, 90×200) - a lightweight mattress with a bamboo cover, the most affordable in a long size.

6. What to buy with a mattress

  • Waterproof fitted sheet YappyShield of the right size - nighttime “accidents” happen even at four years old.
  • Sheets with elastic 160×80 or 90×200 - two or three to alternate.

7. Questions and answers: 3+

For an active child - YappyMiniPocket on independent springs: it does not spring across the entire plane and holds its shape longer. If silence and softness are important - YappyMemory II. Limited budget - YappyFlex.

No: the sizes do not match, and the baby's mattress is too hard and thin for a child 3+. A new bed requires its own mattress.

Any mattress 160×80 from the table above. Pay attention to the height: the barrier of the house must remain higher than the mattress so that the child does not roll off.

Spring and latex - 7–10 years, foam - 5–7. Change it sooner if there are deep dents or an odor that does not go away after washing the cover.

Care and when to change

  • Once a month, turn the mattress head-to-foot, double-sided, depending on the child’s age.
  • Wash the cover at 30–40 °C without bleach and without dryer; ventilate the filling.
  • Change the mattress if there are deep dents that do not go away after turning over, an odor that does not go away after washing the cover, or if the child has outgrown the bed.
  • Do not pass on a mattress “by inheritance”: it is like a toothbrush - a personal hygiene item.

Common mistakes

  • Soft “adult” mattress for a baby. Dangerous for breathing.
  • Mattress does not fit properly. Large gaps or folded edge.
  • Thick mattress in the cot 120×60. The side becomes low.
  • Without a waterproof fitted sheet. The filling will absorb the first “accident”, and the smell will remain forever.
  • Blanket and pillow for a newborn. Up to a year - a sleeping bag and an empty cot.

Bottom line

For cot 0–3: size 120×60, hard side for baby, 9–10 cm, removable cover and waterproof fitted sheet on top. For the bed 3+: bed size, medium hardness, 10–12 cm, springs for active ones, foam for quiet ones. If you have any doubts, write to us and we will select the right one for your age and bed.
